Yesterday Lily hit a milestone. She can sit independently and play. Jared and I thought this day would take forever to get here. We of course couldn't resist snapping a few (HA!) photos of her!!

Baseball and cardiac appointments
With all the nachos, hot dogs, and stressful 9th innings it is easy to associate baseball with heart problems. Yesterday marked the beginning of the 2008 Baseball season. I was proud to see that the Royals started off with a nail biter as they told the World Series Hopefuls that they are not to be overlooked. Alex Gordon is for real! The Cards didn't get in a whole game because of weather, but suprisingly when they did play, they played exceptionally well considering no one really even knows who half of those guys are. I don't even think Larussa knows who his pitchers are. The Cubs, well the cubs fans now have a Japanese guy that gives them another reason to slam a beer and say "this is the year."
Around the Owen household we were anticipating a cardiologist appointment that was scheduled for April 1st. Overall the outcome was not as good as we had expected but yet it is not really all that disappointing either. Lily, like Albert Pujols, has some lingering surgery issues. (But keep in mind Pujols hit a homerun yesterday.) At birth we were told Lils heart condition requires surgery at some point. Although as time went by, Lily's Dr.'s were always so impressed with how she looked, acted, and felt that they reasoned with the belief she may never need surgery. That is until today... Her Dr.'s feel that it may be best to proceed with the surgery as once thought. The status of her heart is not deteriorating, its just that its not getting better either. This surgery can take place anywhere from 18 months to 2 years of age. Of course the older she is the greater the outcome of surgery. While we are nervous about a strong possibility of a future surgery, we know deep down that this will inevitably make her a healthier person. Her life without surgery leaves a a lot of question marks regarding life expectancy and development.
We left the appointment feeling a little uneasy and nervous, but remembering that the Dr.'s continue to be impressed with how well she has grown, and how well she has come along developmentally. Many children with her heart condition are raced to ER's right after birth. Like the KC Royals, Lily manages to battle through the tuff days and look for a brighter day to play. Everyday Tara works with her, and everyday Lily progresses. Without Tara being able to stay home with her, she would not be as successful as she currently is. Maybe George Brett from the Royals will call Tara to see if she can come and help work with the team?
Until next time...
